WordPress has become more than a blog platform, it is most definitely a very complete, stable and feature-rich content management system. I use it for blogs, but I also find I’m using it for more ‘normal’ sites which appear to have static content.

One of the reasons WordPress has gotten so many rave reviews and very happy users is that not only is it simple to install and use, stable for our site visitors and easy to navigate, it has an absolute plethora of plugins to help manage nearly everything you could ever imagine needing for your site.

With that said, following are the plugins I can’t live without (these are not in order of importance, if they were, Ninja Affiliate, Sitemaps, Ping Optimizer, WP SuperCache and SEO Master would be up at the top with WordPress backup!)

Free Must-Have WordPress Plugins:

1) WordPress backup – http://wordpress.designpraxis.at/plugins/backupwordpress/ – BackUpWordPress is a Backup & Recovery Suite for your WordPress website. This Plugin allows you to backup database tables as well as files and comes with a rich set of options.

2) Blogroll Autolinker – http://stevenberg.net/projects/blogroll-autolinker – Blogroll Autolinker automatically turns names from your blogroll into links in your posts. Insert names from your Links Manager in posts and pages and they’ll be turned into links in the published post. You can control which names become links with customizable markup, e.g., square brackets: [link name].

3)  Do Follow – http://kimmo.suominen.com/sw/dofollow/ – This is a plugin for WordPress. It will disable the automatic rel="nofollow" attributes added to external links. You may want to do this if you have good spam filtering for your comments, or if your blog is moderated.

4) Google Sitemaps – http://www.arnebrachhold.de/projects/wordpress-plugins/google-xml-sitemaps-generator/ – This plugin generates a XML-Sitemap compliant sitemap of your WordPress blog. This format is supported by Ask.com, Google, YAHOO and MSN Search.

5) Increase Sociability – http://www.preblogging.com/increase-sociability/ – Increase Sociability is just a smart way to increase your traffic from social media sites, and ultimately to increase your visitors/sales/revenue !

6) Max Banner Ads – http://www.maxblogpress.com/plugins/mba/ – Easily rotate banners and ads in almost anywhere in your wordpress blog without editing the theme

7) MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer – http://www.maxblogpress.com/plugins/mpo/ – Saves your wordpress blog from getting tagged as ping spammer by installing this plugin

Mighty Linker – http://mightyhitter.com/main-page/plugins/mightylinker/ – A plugin that shorten your long URL and make it clickable in post items.

9) Post Teaser (GREAT ONE) – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/post-teaser/ – lets you shorten the amount of each post seen on the front page

10) BIG ONE – SEO Post Link – http://www.maxblogpress.com/plugins/spl/ – Automatically make your post link short and SEO friendly by removing unnecessary words from your post slug.

11) SubscribeMe – http://www.semiologic.com/software/subscribe-me/ – The subscribe me plugin for WordPress lets you easily add site subscription links to popular RSS readers

12) Subscribe Remind – http://www.trevorfitzgerald.com/projects/subscribe-remind – Give your readers a little reminder to subscribe to your blog’s feed at the end of each post.

13) WP-Super Cache – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-super-cache/ – This plugin generates static html files from your dynamic WordPress blog. After a html file is generated your webserver will serve that file instead of processing the comparatively heavier and more expensive WordPress PHP scripts.

14) MOST IMPORTANT ONE – WP SEO Master – http://www.ezbizniz.com/wordpress-plugins/wordpress-seo-master – Adds advanced search engine optimization capabilities to WordPress.

15) SH AutoLink Super – http://www.sethson.com/super-version-of-the-sh-autolink-plugin-for-wordpress/ – The WordPress plugin SH-Autolink is pure gold if you, like me, hate setting up internal linking on your website. The plugin automatically transforms specific words into links, so you don’t have to worry about doing it yourself.
This last one saves TONS AND TONS of time, believe me.

16) Admin Management Xtended – http://www.schloebe.de/wordpress/admin-management-xtended-plugin/#english – I love this one!! When you want to edit properties of posts/pages, you’ll have to open the edit page, set the new options and save the post/page… which obviously takes time. For those who are using WordPress as a CMS, it’s important to be able to manage contents easily and quickly. That’s what this plugin helps to do.

17) MailPress - http://andrerenaut.ovh.org/wp/?page_id=70 – This plugin allows you to send beautiful and styled html and plain text mails based on dedicated themes and templates. If you are already comfortable with Worpress organisation and how it works, you will not be lost with MailPress. The MailPress theme and templates organisation is very similar to WordPress.

18) WhyDoWorkAdsense – http://www.whydowork.com/blog/whydowork-adsense-plugin/ – WhyDoWork Adsense is a WordPress plugin that allows you to insert Adsense ads on your blog without modifying the template. More then that, you can set it up to show different Adsense ads for articles older then X days (x is the number of days you decide).

Premium Must-Have WordPress Plugins:

Well, I’ve found one that I would now absolutely NOT do without. It replaces number 15 above, even though I’ve used SH-Autolink for almost 4 years!
