Getting Started With the Popular CMS, Joomla

Jun 20th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Traffic & Marketing

Joomla is a CMS (content management system) that is open source software. Open source software is built and maintained by a community of authors. The best part of the deal with open source software is that it is free to use. You can find a download of Joomla on their download page at joomla.com.

In order to run this cms, your server has to be able to support PHP and the MySql database. You should be sure to have 50 megabytes of storage available at a minimum. This will allow the space it needs for it’s database and install files. If you plan for your website to become large, you should go ahead and secure at least a gigabyte of disk space. Your website is likely to use a lot of extra space if you plan to have a lot of images or video.

Once you have the software zip file downloaded on your computer you need to unpack it and prepare to upload it to your server. You can find a good unzipping utility at 7unzip.com for free. Open your FTP client (such as CuteFTP) and upload the files to the appropriate spot on your server. This can either be the root of your domain (mydomain.com) or a subdomain (mydomain.com/joomla/).

Now it is time to install Joomla and all of it’s database components. At this point you can close your FTP client because the rest of it will be done through your web browser. Simply point your browser to the web address where you installed all of the files at.

The first screen that you see will allow you to change the language for the install process. Choose your language and click the ‘Next’ button to go to the next screen.

The software now checks to make sure everything is in order on your server by running a pre-installation check. If everything is in order you will see a list of green ‘yes’ along all of the checkpoints. If you see a ‘no’ in red then there is something wrong. You will have to go back and correct it. If you cannot figure out how to fix the problem you might have to contact your server administrator to correct the problem. Click the ‘Next’ button to continue.

You are now on the database configuration page. You can setup a database through Cpanel, Plesk or phpMyAdmin – or, if you have a managed server, you can request the database setup from your techs. If you do not know how to do this or do not have that sort of control on your server then you need to contact your server admin to setup a database for you. Now enter your database type. This is normally simply “mysql”, so use that as the default. “localhost” is the hostname 99% of the time but if you are unsure of this then check with your server admin. Fill in your user name and password and click the ‘Next’ button.

This is the main configuration screen. Set your website name and enter your email address and password. Don’t worry if you are not sure about the website name you can always go back and change it later. Click ‘Next’ to go to the finish screen.

Get back on your FTP client and delete the ‘installation’ folder. Joomla will not work if you skip this step. If you feel you need a bit more coaching on using Joomla you should check out the help documentation at http://docs.joomla.org/Beginners/.

There are literally hundreds of useful plugins which have been created for this CMS – so I’m quite sure you’ll spend a bit of time downloading/installing and trying out some of the great plugin features this software has to offer.
