Some Notes on Meta Tags
Jun 16th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: SEOLet’s look at some facts and links on META tags. Here’s some helpful sites that I’ve built up over the years. There’s a lot of very good info in these links:
Info on the Title, Description and Keywords tags:
“I’m wondering if there’s a limit to how many words you use in them.”
I’ve seen some pages in the search engines with absolute MONSTER meta tags! Some of these tags almost fill the entire screen when you view the source. BUT there’s a limit to how many words will be ‘read’ by the search engines. Think about using 20 to 25 words maximum – but plan for a lot less. 10 words is often fine.
However, it’s also important to mention when dealing with META tags that these tags (especially the keywords tag) are not as important as they used to be. Perhaps even that gives them more credit than they deserve. There’s an on-going discussion, and has been for some time, as to whether or not the keywords tag and description tag are even a factor these days.
The Keyword & Description tags USED to be very important, indeed. Getting them right a few years back WAS the key to getting a good ranking. I think that was where the idea became firmly routed that these tags were the answer to search engine success. But things have changed a lot since then. SE’s now look at the page structure as well as other factors (eg, with google – PR is another factor).
BUT… you’ve still got to use these tags. ANYTHING that has even a chance of getting you ahead in this competitive environment should definitely be used. It’s not like they’re a gigantic job. For me, they fall into the category of ‘don’t help much – but for the time it takes to put them in – I might as well…’
Another use of metas? Some smaller search engines and directories won’t even index your site unless you have meta tags – and every link, every visitor – well, they’re important!
The very best advice I can give anyone wanting to get into the SE’s is to throw a lot of experiments out there – build and submit a lot of pages, using lots of ‘legal’ techniques. Then, when you get ANY kind of ranking – look carefully to see WHY it did so well…
Good luck and happy META tagging!
