Making the Most Out of ONE Domain Name

Dec 19th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Newbie Boot Camp

You’re starting out and one of the first things you’ll be sorting out is finding a place for all your projects to live. For most of us this means finding some hosting and a domain name.

As you read webmaster forums you’ll probably be aware that webmasters who have been in the business more than a year will likely have a number of domain names. But do YOU really need to get lots of these things when you’re starting out? Definitely not. The webmasters with lots of domain names, like you, probably started out with one name – and made a lot of pages to go on there. So let’s look at how to maximize ONE domain name.

If you’re going to buy one domain and use it for many different sites and pages – take a look at this article: Choosing A Generic Domain

Breaking your domain up into manageable pieces

When you buy a domain name and set up your hosting, you can then start to upload pages and begin to build up your pages. But it’s important to stop for a moment at this stage and to think about the future. Getting the most out of one domain name will mean keeping your butt organized. A domain name is a bit like a huge paper folder. If you were to add 1000 sheets of paper in there, it would be pretty well… unmanageable. Adding in those cardboard divider things would make your life a lot easier.

With domain names, the dividers take the form of sub-folders. Instead of just uploading page after page to our new domain – we break the domain into sub-folders which will keep us sane and at least a bit organized as the domain grows.

Example.

Let’s say we bought the name best-natural-health.com (and I’ve no clue if that’s a real name or NOT!)

We might add folders to break the domain up into niche areas:

best-natural-health.com/aromatherapy-anxiety/
best-natural-health.com/hypnotherapy/
best-natural-health.com/herbs-for-kids/
best-natural-health.com/pms-relief/

OR… we could break it up by types of site:

best-natural-health.com/article-directory/
best-natural-health.com/free-health-ebooks/
best-natural-health.com/health-links/
best-natural-health.com/blog/

And in each one of those – you could have the niche:

best-natural-health.com/health-links/aromatherapy/
best-natural-health.com/health-links/hypnotherapy/
best-natural-health.com/health-links/homeopathy/
best-natural-health.com/health-links/herbs/

and so on…

But the important thing is to learn about how to create sub-folders with FTP and work out a system to keep you organized as the domain’s content grows. The last thing you need is to waste precious time hunting for a page on your server. Keep organized!

If you prefer sub-domains to sub-folders eg. you want to create blog.best-natural-health.com – and know how to create them on your webspace – then use ‘em.

Take a big sheet of paper and plan the domain name out. Furthermore – keep this sheet updated as your master map as it grows each day. You’ll be glad you did 5 months down the line when you’ve forgotten about what you’ve made today.

Free content – cheap-to-make pages

Now we come to what to put on your new domain name. This domain is going to be the foundation of your entire empire. You’re going to eat, sleep and LIVE with this domain intensely in the coming months so I hope you like it! This domain name is the corner stone of your business and you’ll never own another one like it. So what do we put on it???

Start by thinking about some kinds of pages that do NOT cost you anything to build up. Some examples of this are:

1) Some simple article pages targeted at a problem/ailment, solution/remedy, etc – that has links within the text leading to your affiliate program’s site/products.
2) A site ‘reviewing’ products which are sold by your affiliate programs
3) A ‘fake’ link list which links to your affiliate program’s sites or product pages
4) Sites made from an affiliate program’s sales tools such as:
– an article site.
– a branded store front.
– free ebook site.
– product datafeed site
5) Sites using your sponsor’s picture of the day programs.

Now take those 7 points and multiply them by:

- the number of niches you have learned about…
– and by the number of affiliate programs you have…

It’s starting to look like we might NEED to make 300,000 pages!!! We’ve got a lot of work to do on this one domain.

Even if you’ve got limited time, and in the beginning when there’s a lot of reading to do, add ONE PAGE TO YOUR DOMAIN EACH DAY. No matter what! It doesn’t matter if there’s nuclear bombs dropping outside of your window – ADD one page to the domain name every day…

And that means STARTING TODAY!!!

Upload it and let it do it’s job. So long as you’re adding to your domain name something new each day – you’ll start moving forward and building traffic and sales up.

Some FAQs…

Is there a limit to much you can build on one domain?

No. There’s no practical limit to the number of sub-folders a domain name can hold, or the number of pages you can create. When you consider that the famous domain name microsoft.com has hundreds of thousands of pages on it – that should give you an idea of what you ‘could’ do on one domain name.

Are sub-domains better than sub-folders?

No. There’s no advantage of one over the other. Some webmasters prefer sub-domains; others opt for sub-folders. You choose.

If I’m building lots of niche sites – where should the htaccess redirect lost traffic?

Don’t forget that you can create a different .htaccess file for each of your sub folders. This lets you have one for each of your sub’d sites – redirecting traffic to relevant areas rather than to a general area.

Won’t the search engines mind all these pages on one domain?

No. Going back to the microsoft.com example. That domain has literally 100s of thousands of pages in Google.com at the time this was written. So long as you don’t break any of the search engine’s rules – you’ll be fine.

What should the root index.html/index.php (homepage) page be?

If you have a lot of pages on this domain name it could be a great idea to have a ‘portal’ style page here – which links to some of your articles, reviews, mini-sites or pre-sell pages and other areas.

Where should the images go?

Always create a folder called /images/ in each sub-folder on the domain and put the images for each site / project in there.
