#1 Be accountable. This means being ready to justify and back up your professional actions. If you take an action, make sure youre transparent and accountable. Document results and actions taken for transparency. Now you may be thinking, what if a decision I make doesnt work out, it turns out to be the wrong decision.
That may happen however if youre tracking data and actions taken then you can correct your mistakes. And if it works out, which it will because youre good at your job, then you have data to back up your successes. This data can be used when you plead your case for a raise or a promotion and having it readily available is impressive to employers and bosses.
#2 Be a yes woman, or man. Being positive has a strong effect on your likeability. Now were not saying you have to say yes to everything however instead of saying no offer options. For example if a superior asks you to do something and you just dont feel you have the time to accomplish it, you have two options. Say yes and find a way to make it happen or be quick to point out the benefits of having someone else take on the project. Focus on the positive and the benefits for the company.
#3 Let yourself, and your work be seen. There are projects which are more visible to the higher ups than others. Find ways to become involved in these high visibility projects and to make a contribution. It may mean volunteering or putting in extra hours however when your work is noticed and your contributions are noticed by your superiors you become someone who has that all important front of mind awareness. You become the invaluable go to person.
#4 Schmooze a little. No, were not talking about chatting the boss up about how great their new haircut looks however attending work events and associating with leaders both in your company and in your industry will only look good.
#5 Continue your education. Workshops, conferences and continuing your education at your local university or online is a great way to boost your authority, credibility and value. Make time to further your education in your industry and make sure the important folks in the office know youre doing it.
Climbing the corporate ladder is about more than doing your best at your job. Its about making sure the right people know what you do and how good you are at it. Its about making sure youre invaluable to your workplace and your achievements are noticed by those who matter.
