Easy Ways to Optimize a Flash Movie

Because of this, Flash often causes a website to load slower than they have the patience to wait for. I will go over a few things you can do to make your Flash load much more quickly.
The first thing you can do is to be sure and use symbols for all the elements that show up in your movie more than one time. Symbols are elements that are in the library of your Flash movie. This way you will not have to add additional graphics to the movie library.
Try to avoid using raster graphics if at all possible. Vector graphics take up much less space than raster graphics. For those of you new to these terms a vector graphic is simply a mathematical definition of your graphic. A raster graphic is a .JPG or .GIF, for example. There should be no problem with using a raster graphic occasionally but do not make the mistake of designing your entire site with them. The load time will be huge.
If you decide to use a raster graphic make sure you optimize it’s size. This can be done easily with Fireworks or any of the free programs available all over the internet. It can also be done right in Flash by tapping CTRL + L and unchecking the box that says ‘use imported JPEG data’. After you do this you should be free to adjust the quality of your image file.
Flash MX allows you to load .JPG images dynamically. The load command is the same as is used to load .SWF files; using the loadmovie() action. To do this you add a movieclip to the stage and name it “jpgholder”. Next add this actionscript:
loadmovie(“name_of_jpg.jpg”,”jpgholder”);
You cannot do this with progressive JPG images. So be careful!
Flash MX offers several useful optimization tools built right in. The Optimize, smooth and straighten commands are on the menu bar and can help you reduce the file size of your movie drastically. Use these tools, progressively, until you reach the level of optimization that gives you a nice picture and file size at the same time.
In the modify menu there is a command called “Trace Bitmap”. Use this to convert a .BMP into a vector image. GIF’s usually turn out better than JPG files. This is one that is worth messing around with so that you can become familiar with what it does.
Make sure that you use MP3 compression for the sound. MP3 is the most optimized format available. After the MP3 file has been imported tap CTRL + L and right click the sound file to reach the properties. Uncheck “use imported MP3 quality” and lower the bit rate to suit your tastes.

Having a flash in your website is great, just remember not to over use it, and make sure it does not take up more than 30% of the web page, as search engines spiders still have difficulties in reading them.
