So, you’ve modified your site to conform with the DMOZ Guidelines and now you are ready to submit. DMOZ requires that you submit your site to the most relevent category. So, where do you begin?

Submitting your site to the ‘best’ fitting category can mean the difference between getting a timely review and listing, and having editors bounce your site around within the directory to where it ‘should’ be listed….taking up valuable time. If you get it right when you submit, that’s one less thing the editor has to do before accepting your site.

Let’s use an example:

Metaphysical Wholesale

This site is strictly a ‘Shopping’ site. It ultimately carries no content other than items offered for sale.

So…I got to http://www.dmoz.org/ and click on the ‘Shopping’ category. Once I’m there, I decide that the sub-category, within ‘Shopping’, my site would fit best is ‘Religious’….so, I click. To my delight I find a sub-category for ‘New Age’. Perfect. Within ‘New Age’ I see a list of individual ‘new age’ type items listed. Well, my site has many different items….but, there IS a category called ‘Wholesale‘. Yup, perfect fit. So, I click ‘Wholesale‘. Bam. No more sub-categories are listed, and I think this is the best fit for the site.

I am now going to submit my site to:

http://www.dmoz.org/Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/New_Age/Shopping/Wholesale.

At the top of each category page is a ‘Suggest URL’ link….click, and submit away. (more on this in my next entry)

Some of you may notice that the URL above is NOT part of the dmoz.org/Shopping/ category which is where we started….good eye. What happened is, the link to the ‘Religious’ category in the Top/Shopping cat is an “@link”….meaning, the religious shopping category is housed under a different top category. (in this case, Society/Religion_and_Spirituality/) @links are meant to make categories easier to find…so, don’t have a cow if the final category URL you are submitting to doesn’t match your surfing path that got you there.

The key is to get as deep into the directory as possible, finding the appropriate category for your site. If I were to have submitted the above site directly into dmoz.org/Shopping/ I’d be waiting a very long time before it was shuffled down the line, by many different editors, to the /New_Age/Shopping/Wholesale/ category.

If by chance, you feel your site fits more than one category, choose the category you think it fits BEST. Do NOT submit to more than one category, as the majority of sites are listed only ONCE. Additionally, this may be construde as spamming…and we don’t want that, do we?
