Communication Barriers
Oct 15th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Business BasicsUnderstanding and developing good communication skills is an important factor in teambuilding, interpersonal relationships and the work environment. However, as with anything else which is important, there are barriers to good communication. In fact, there are probably more barriers to good communication then there is time to list them here so, let’s go through a couple of the top ones.
Because communication is something we do naturally not too many people take the trouble to learn how to do it appropriately. Communicating should be straightforward, but it isn’t. It is complex, difficult and often frustrating especially when encountering barriers.
One of the biggest barrier is in the workplace are physical barriers. These are marked out territories into which strangers are not allowed. These territories can be marked off through closed office doors, screens or separate areas build for individuals who have different status within the company. At home the physical barrier is the closed door that leads to the teenagers room or the locked master bedroom door.
We all see the world differently and if we didn’t, there would be no need to communicate. Encountering a physical barrier means that the individual must work a bit harder to communicate their thoughts and desires to others.
One of the biggest barriers to open and free communication are emotional barriers. These emotional barriers are mostly made up of fear and mistrust and are rooted in our emotional mistrust of others that developed in our childhood. As a result of many of the things we heard from our parents he hold back from communicating our thoughts and feelings to others. It makes us feel vulnerable and that isn’t always a nice place to be.
Another common barrier are poor listening skills. On occasion, we all let our minds wander no matter how hard we try to concentrate. People who listen to information which they find difficult to understand or which has little bearing on their own limbs will be likely to drift off. And unfortunately just too many of us are not good listeners.
Others will encounter both cultural and language barriers. When we are the new person in any group we find that there are group dynamics already in place. Cultural barriers do not have to mean the differences in individuals who come from different countries but rather adjust the differences in individuals who come from different groups or employers. Likewise, language barriers are not necessarily the differences in languages from different countries but can also be the differences in jargon used between different professions.
There are also distinct differences between the speech patterns and men and women. Often quoted are the differences in numbers of words which women speak per day versus men: 22,000 to 7000. And in childhood, girls also speak earlier and more than boys and have twice the vocabulary of boys at the age of three.
The reasons for this lay in the neurological development of the brain. Interestingly, men speak in a linear and logical fashion while women freely mix logic and emotion (features of both sides of the brain). This also explains why women are more apt to recover speech and language skills more quickly from a stroke than do men.
Psychologists have found several ways of helping to overcome the exterior’s both in the workplace and at home. By using simple words to convey your message you often have the ability to get past the cultural and language barriers as well as decrease the amount of time people start to space out while you’re talking.
People usually will seek out good listeners. When you learn the art of listening you have the advantage of understanding the other person’s point of view, what makes them tick and what they desire. And remember, knowledge is power. By understanding others you are more likely to be able to give them what they want in order that you receive what you want.
And last, but certainly not least, the process of communication is much more effective if emotions are kept in check in the conversation is centered around a specific task or disagreements and emotions are not brought into it. Because of the differences in communication styles between men and women, men have an easier time of accomplishing this task than do women.
To really ask cell in the process of interpersonal communications people must understands the barriers which lay in front of them and have a plan of action. Using this plan you can improve the success of any team with which you work.
