Cleaning Up Your Workspace Can Increase Productivity

You can help your week start off a lot better if you just do a little house cleaning before you leave work on Friday. Not only will your week start off better but you can relax a bit more during the weekend knowing that you have everything wrapped up at the office – even if that office is in your home!
Here are a few ways that having a cluttered work can affect your ability to do your job effectively:
1. Important notes or documents may become lost in the clutter.
2. If you take a look at your desk when you are not working (many of us work at home) you will be reminded that you have 1001 things to do.
3. A whole lot of clutter can leave you feeling lost. Your attention needs to be 
on your work not the mess that is piled on your desk.
Now you might be thinking to yourself that you are pretty organized. Maybe it should not be of concern to you. After all, you are good at keeping up on emails and your computer desktop looks nice and clean. Being organized with your tasks is just one side of the coin. You must keep your physical environment organized to be 100% effective.
If your desk and office has been disorganized for a very long time then don’t try to fix it all on one Friday afternoon. Set up a medium length goal and clean it a little each week (or day) for a month or two. As you are doing this make sure that you don’t add to the clutter in any way. Each time a new paper comes in then you should deal with it immediately, not add it to the top of the pile.
Each person has a different view on what it means to be clean and organized. Decide what works for you and go with it. It does not matter how ‘Betty’ in the next cubicle keeps her desk. What she does to stay organized might not work for you at all.
If you become too absorbed by the whole keeping organized and clean syndrome then you need to step back and take a look at your plan. There is something wrong with how you are going about it and you should reevaluate how you accomplish this.
You might find that you get a lot more done and feel much better about your work when everything is nice and tidy. Make sure that your computer desktop is free of icons and giving it a new wallpaper might leave you feeling refreshed.
