Choosing a Generic Domain Name

What do I mean by a “generic domain name“? Simply a domain name (eg. domain-name.com) where you don’t describe a certain niche within the name.
Example niche domain names:
aromatherapy-for-anxiety.com
cutechihuahuaclothes.com
pitbullsaspets.com
Example of more GENERIC domain names:
bestaromatherapy.com
bestpets.com
petsnmorepets.com
Some times you just need a name that you can build a variety of sites or pages under. While you CAN use any domain name and make any site on there, I think it helps to have a general kind of name where you can create sub-folders that then become the niche name.
eg.
bestpets.com/chihuahua-clothes/
bestaromatherapy.com/anxiety-essential-oils/
petsnmorepets.com/pit-bulls/
Some uses for generic domain names are:
• Your own one-page mini sites to send traffic from articles/social networking sites to in order to presell site visitors.
• Where you want to have multiple sites in different niches on one domain.
• Pay per click – where you again might have different sites.
• Your own little links site or ebook repository or article directory.
Picking the name out can be tricky, so here’s some tips to help:
• Try adding hyphens between the words if the name you want was taken.
• Think about a place eg.
furry-pet-plaza.com
aromatherapy-spa.com
petpalplanet.com
• Use a person’s name:
annes-favorite-pets.com
johns-aromatherapy-heaven.com
saras-best-pets.com
• Adding in an object could yield some interesting results:
aromatherapy-cupboard.com
anxiety-lens.com
• And you might even have luck finding a name that simply describes what this domain will hold:
some-aromatherapy-links.com
central-pet-links.com
central-aromatherapy-hub.com
• How about a totally made-up word? I did that with my youngest 3 kids’ names. They are Christian, Kaitlyn and Jessica – Caije.com:
Be abstract, be weird, try some crazy things. And above all, remember not to get specific. Test out in your mind what some sub-folders for the different niches out there would look like on this domain.
