How To Sell Your Business And Get The Most

Mar 12th, 2010 | By Dee | Category: Business Basics

There comes a time in many business owners’ lives when they want to sell their business for one reason or another. It may be that you’ve grown the business to a desirable level and are ready to move on to something new, it may be that you’re ready to retire or it may be that you’re heading back to a 9-5 opportunity. It doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you sell your business well and get the most money you can. Here are a few things to consider as you prepare to sell your business.
How much is it worth? It pays to have an objective source take care of the valuation process for you. This is because it’s easy to over value your own business, it is after all something you built from the ground up so it has a personal value to you that cannot be measured, however your buyer isn’t generally interested in personal value. A valuation will take your business’s market position, financial situation, and strengths and weaknesses into consideration to come up with a net value.
Do you have documentation? Buyers will generally want to be able to review at least three years of financial information. That means you’ll need formal account statements to show them. Think about it from their perspective, what would you want to see and know before you bought a business? You’d want to know how much they made, what their annual expenses are and you’ll want that information to be easy to read and understand, right? That also includes your legal paperwork too. Who owns the domain name and so on.
Make sure your business is polished to a shine and is running optimally before you put it up for sale. Make sure your content is updated, your links are working and all of your business strategies are working effectively. The more appealing your business looks, the more potential buyers you’ll have.
Put the word out to people you may think are interested in buying your business first. If you don’t get any bites, you can list your business for sale on any number of sites dedicated to that purpose. There’s a real benefit to having multiple interested buyers because it gives you more negotiation power. When you meet with buyers it’s important to remember the skills of negotiation which are that patience and confidence are extremely powerful.
Discussing the sale of your business may happen online via email, over the phone or face to face, keep in mind the reason you’re selling your business and the goals you have for yourself. This will help you negotiate with a positive mindset because it can be hard to let go of a business even if you know it’s the right decision to make.
Selling your business for the most takes a little preparation, a lot of organization and the same go get ‘em attitude that helped you grow your business to the point it’s at. You can do it!
